Protective Rugby Clothing is Essential « Cora Vaillancourt
Rugby is a sport played by many, and with the advent of a new year, the upcoming rugby season of 2010 is something that is being highly anticipated. It may be someone’s first year of playing rugby, or their tenth, but the excitement of the sport never dies.
Of course, for anyone playing rugby, it is essential that they have the correct rugby clothing to play in. It can be quite a physical sport, with a lot of contact between players, so making sure they are completely protected is essential.
There are many items of protective rugby clothing; head guards, vests and shoulder guards. The head guards are available for junior and senior players, and are shaped to form a protective bubble shape around the head. They are made by a variety of manufacturers, including Adidas, Kooga and Puma, and have foam padding to ensure that anything hit onto them has a good chance of not hitting through to the player’s head.
The protective vests are also made by well known manufacturers and provide protection for both the shoulder and sternum areas. Made from nylon, they are stretchy and allow the skin to breathe during play. Playing rugby can lead to people becoming hot, and it is important they do not overheat mid-game. Canterbury, Optimum and Kooga are three of the manufacturers who make these vests.
Shoulder guards are designed specifically to protect the shoulder and upper back of the player, and are worn underneath the vest. One such product from Adidas is designed to look like a tank top, but the shoulder areas are designed to be high density, and moulded into the shoulder shape for extra protection.
As well as protective rugby clothing, there are accessories that need to be bought additionally such as mouth guards and forearm guards. The last thing you need during the game is to bite your tongue, so wearing a mouth guard will prevent this. It is possible to buy mouth guards that fit over existing braces, and a lot are latex free. Forearm guards help to protect against knocks to this delicate area of the body, and are often used in training and match plays.
As well as protective rugby clothing, players will need to ensure they have adequate shorts, base layers and t-shirts to play the game correctly. Training outfits should be kept separate from the rugby clothing worn during a match, and as such specific training gear is available to buy.
With all of the equipment a rugby player needs to have, it is possible to buy sports bags that are designed purely to hold the various pieces of rugby clothing and accessories for each training session and /or match. You can choose from a holdall style bag, or individual bags for boots, balls etc – whatever suits the needs of the player. Brand names such as Adidas, Canterbury, Mizuno and Gilbert are all available to choose from, so you’ll know the bags are going to be well made and durable.
